FAISALABAD:
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has decided to replace old pumping machinery and tube wells to provide potable drinking water from Chiniot to Faisalabad with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Wasa Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz told media persons on Sunday. An agreement in this regard will be signed on August 27 (Tuesday).
Aziz said that the pumping machinery at Bawa Chak main water reservoir, first installed in 1992, will be replaced at a cost of Rs1.5 billion. “Faisalabad is supplied drinking water from of River Chenab through a 32km long pipeline,” Aziz said, “Several studies have shown that groundwater in the city is contaminated.”
He said that for four decades, the Wasa had only supplied potable water to 55 per cent of the city. It has now made arrangements to provide water from River Chenab to the entire city.
Aziz said that the JICA had also agreed to provide a laboratory and gadgets including rain gauges, water level sensors and water recording gauges worth Rs46.5 million to improve its sewerage system.
