KARACHI:

A little less than 2,000 seats will be up for grabs at the NED University of Engineering and Technology as the admissions process for the upcoming academic year commences on August 26.

Prospective students will be able to submit their application forms with the necessary documents for admissions to 22 distinct engineering disciplines by September 25, the university’s admissions director, Dr Muhammad Tufail, told The Express Tribune.

Entrance test

The university will conduct the entrance test on September 28, which is considered by most as a mere formality because all they have to do is pass the test. Their admission into the university is based on their results in the intermediate exams, they believe.

In contrast to other universities, where applicants’ past academic record as well as performance in the entrance test and interviews count for the overall application, Dr Tufail, explaining the eligibility criteria for admission, said that the university gave credence to the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi results.

Since last year, however, the university has increased the entrance test benchmark. In the past, prospective students who earned 40 marks in the test were offered a seat - now, they have to earn 50 marks.

Increase in fee

Earlier in June, the university’s academic council, headed by the vice chancellor, Prof. Dr Afzalul Haque, also approved a 20 per cent increase in the fee structure, which means that the 1,676 merit students would now have to pay Rs21,000 at the time of admission. The step also translates into an increase of Rs0.1 million for the 313 students on self-finance seats who were already paying half-a-million rupees.
