Setting aside fierce US opposition to the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project, in a strategic move, the pipeline may be stretched and connected to western China as Islamabad and Beijing have made it part of the planned economic corridor.
Earlier, India was actively involved in the pipeline project, but withdrew following a civil nuclear energy agreement with the US. Now, prospects have emerged that China will replace India and receive gas from the pipeline that will connect Iran, Pakistan and China.
According to sources, Pakistani and Chinese officials will discuss the laying of the gas pipeline from Gwadar to western China in a meeting to be held here on August 26. They will also take up a proposal about constructing an oil pipeline between the two countries.
The two sides will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the economic corridor, which had already been approved by the cabinet.
The upcoming dialogue is a follow-up to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit to China in the first week of July. During the trip, Chinese companies expressed interest in laying the gas pipeline from the Gwadar Port to western China. Iran has also expressed interest in stretching the pipeline to China.
As part of the economic corridor, Gwadar Port will be connected through road and rail links to China which will help enhance trade between the two countries. Oil and gas pipelines will feature in the economic corridor, providing much-needed boost to economic activities in insurgency-hit Balochistan.
Pakistan government has asked Iran to bear the entire cost of the gas pipeline as it has found it difficult to arrange funds from some countries following pressure from the US.
The US is pressing Pakistan to shelve the IP pipeline and rather focus on the TAPI gas pipeline which will start from Turkmenistan and reach India through war-torn Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Iran has already committed $500 million for financing Pakistan’s side of the pipeline but Islamabad insists that Tehran should enhance the credit limit
Total cost of pipeline construction in Pakistan has been estimated at $1.5 billion. To cover part of the cost, the government will award a contract for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) to Iranian firm Tadbir Energy.
“We are waiting for a response from the new Iranian government,” an official said, adding Tehran had already assured the previous government that it could enhance the credit limit if required.
Under the project, Pakistan will import 750 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) with an option to increase it to one billion cubic feet. Of the import, the Balochistan government seeks to consume 250 mmcfd at the Gwadar Port, which may encourage the central government to purchase more from Iran to meet needs of the least developed province.

The answer is right there in this very article! Did you even read it before commenting?

Naresh there is a thing called energy security and for that u need to diversify your energy supplies.
@Observer: Can someone explain why China would invest the $30B that would be required for this IPC project when China can more readily get all the gas it wants from Turkmenistan and other CAR countries that are a lot closer to Xinjiang? . 1. You beat me to it! . 2. XINJIANG "EXPORTS" Oodles of Billions of Xinjiang Origin Natural Gas to China! . 3. Turkmenistan : Exports - commodities : gas, crude oil, petrochemicals, textiles, cotton fiber . 4. Exports - partners : China 66%, Ukraine 7%, Italy 4.5% (2012) . 5. Good Luck to the Iran - Pakistan - China Pipe Line
Those that can do - do. Those that can't - talk about doing. Your never going to resolve your energy crisis until you stop BSing the people.
Gulam Rasool "Kuldeep sharma"
US wouldn't put sanctions on Pakistan this time, there are legal loopholes in US law which Pakistan will use. But I'm pretty sure Iran-US standoff will come to an end peacefully in near future, and that will be a big booster for this pipeline. Meanwhile, India may rejoice at "Pakistan-may-shatter" etc.
@3rdRockFromTheSun: Who knows what tomorrow will bring. Never let pessimism ruin the day. Salams
This augurs well for the region and growth. Recently, it was reported that construction of the pipeline was abandoned and all of us thought the project is a 'no-show.' Now all of a sudden this news item means it's very much in the cards. Rather than have a guaranteed supply of funds and oil at discounted rates, the logical conclusion will be to have an assured and continous of neccessities grown in our own backyard; in an area contiguous with ours. Does it make sense to export all the time to USA and Europe when our own internal economy is ripe to grow and the Asian Century is being born? Salams
Let me complete this story, ...... It will trigger US Sanctions & Pakistani Economy will be almost equal to Somalian. Even Daily basis bred earners will feel the heat of US Sanctions. Hence this pipeline will not deliver even a single canister of gas to Pakistan because this is not going to complete.
It only a proposal in initial stages and Indians are livid in rage. They can only respond by doubling down on terror. Lat us see them play Karzai card or obama card.
Pakistan shouldnt be part of TAPI as it serves the interest of the US mostly. ExxonMobil benefits the most from this project. Two loosers will emerge from TAPI project - Afghanistan and Pakistan. Keeping the distance in mind, the price of imported gas will rise tremendously by the time it reaches Pakistan compared to IP project. Initial investment in TAPI would be twice if not thrice. We need reasonably priced gas to boost Balochistan's economic structure.
@M. Emad: Do you live in Baluchistan? You seem so confident of your opinion. Economic development in any given area is usually welcomed by the people. It is just like building schools , colleges and hospitals in a given area. Who will be against it?
@neil: Please keep on laughing .
Atleast show Occupied Kashmir in the Pakistan's map, ET be mature now.
The whole nation is going insane...khyaalee palao!! it would be funny if it wasn't so cruel...yes sure IP to Pakistan, then to China, then to Turkey, then to Germany, then to UK...and then to USA under the sea ...haha..pagul hai...
Can someone explain why China would invest the $30B that would be required for this IPC project when China can more readily get all the gas it wants from Turkemnistan and other CAR countries that are a lot closer to Xinjiang?
@Mirza: How simple! Matter resolved. Ha ha ha.
First let's connect the IP to pakistan. All talk and no action.
Great news..
I see extreme hostile & threatening comments by Indians are published by ET moderators but little challenging suggestion of Pakis are omitted. That give Indians an unequal playground. I winder who is ET catering to, when least Indian papers censor Pak comments. <So now there is visible reason for the frustration in Pak readers. Maybe ET publishers have some hidden agenda we don't know.
this will be game changer in the region. security is an issue but is not a deal breaker because with oil and gas pipeline from gawadar to china, arab states will also be onboard and will stop playing their negative part in balochistan. future looks bright
Dream on ! More illusions, while you suffer in belief ! Hey ! You can't even get a deal done on this project to supply Pakistan ! Why are you concerned and dreaming about sweeter than honey friend ? Rest assure they are not likely to fund this thing, either ! What has happened to this Nation ? Have people lost all ability to their Ghairat ? And yet are prepared to show its desperation !
And of course pigs can fly. Mr Shariff again is taking big again & again and forgetting the ground reality of law and order and the influence of USA
May the daydreaming continue ever and ever!
Encouraging development, but one thing is certain that Pakistan will surely be missing the deadline of Jan 2014 in order to avoid penalties.
If China joins the same IP pipeline even then the survey of the proposed route took a good six months. Or maybe they are planning to complete the Pak Section of IP line first and then connect it through Southern Sindh junction or Southern Balochistan, will see.
My opinion would be Pak should go full burner with IP line and try to complete it in first quarter of 2014 come what may, if US irks or not, sanction imposed or not. A separate pipeline should should be laid from Iran-Gwadar-Westren China.
Outsmarting is good thing but being bold is even better.
regards,
Please use the correct map of Pakistan
smart move! Pak-Iran-China nexus is formidable
Sheikh chilli could not have done better. After talking about this project for 15 years, neither funding for the project has been closed out nor contractor selected for building a pipeline to Gwadar and now it is being linked to another pie in the sky project for which again there is no funding.
Balochistan people (of both Pakistan & Iran sides) will not tolerate any pipeline in their land because they are not consulted at all. Chinese leadership and people should be wise enough not to involve in any Balochistan related projects.
If this project is successful, PML(N)'s leadership might have done a good job as it is important for Pakistan to have good economic ties with its neighbors. However, real opposition may arise from US, India in terms of increased insurgent activities using BLA, arab countries including Saudi Arab. Lets pray that our current leadership goes through with these obstacles.
Now this is a real break through if this idea comes to action out of documents.
China's involvement would probably make sure this pipeline would actually happen. This is good news!
This is smart thinking on the part of Pakistan. Iran builds pipeline on its side and China pays for the rest to get the benefit as end user. This way Pakistan gets the benefits for free just to let the pipeline pass through! Let us hope we are not too clever for our own good.
GOOD NEWS! :-)
lmao ...first start the pipeline ...man PAK govt is going insane..borrowing money to pay loans and they are going to extend it to China...hahahaha..thx for the laugh ET ....
This may sound like a 'pipe dream' - couldn't help the pun.
Sorry, but can't see the Chinese allow their 'energy' (even partial) supply held hostage to a 'war-torn' Pakistan - who can provide no guarantees for the safety and security of the pipeline or the contents thereof.
Rubbish -- classic Pakistan where you talk about extending a non existent pipeline. How about finishing the plan for the pipeline, determining how your going to provide security for it, find the financing, select a contractor and then actually build a meter or two of pipeline before talking about extending it.
Good move it true and not just show off.
if it happens it could be the game changer
Don't wast time and money, the US won't allow that. Enough said.
