KARACHI:

Pakistan’s Aisamul Haq Qureshi and his Dutch partner Jean-Julien Rojer crashed out of the Cincinnati Open men’s doubles event, losing to Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in the second round.

After losing the first set, the Pakistani-Dutch duo put up a fight in the second taking it to a tie-break, but Fyrstenberg and Matkowski sealed the victory after winning the second set 7-6 (7-3).

Aisam and Rojer received a bye in the first round.

Earlier, the duo played the Rogers Cup in Montreal, where they reached the quarter-finals but lost to the unseeded pair of Andy Murray and Colin Fleming.

Despite the defeats in the last three tournaments at the beginning of the hardcourt season, Aisam and Rojer have managed to maintain their ATP rankings on number five with 2,335 points. Aisam remained in 12th place in the doubles individual rankings.

Earlier, he had said that he will be playing at least three tournaments before the US Open that will begin on August 26.

Djokovic cruises, Federer struggles into quarters

Novak Djokovic continued his quest for a first title at the Cincinnati Open while Roger Federer kept alive his bid for a sixth as the seeded pair advanced into the quarter-finals.

The contrast between the wins could not have been more stark, with top seed Djokovic crushing Belgian qualifier David Goffin 6-2, 6-0 in just 50 minutes.

Federer is seeded fifth and was the winner here a year ago on the fast hard-court where he thrives. He had to rally from the depths after a disaster of an opening set, finally overhauling German Tommy Haas 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.

“I wasn’t playing great in the first set, I needed to clean up my game from the baseline,” said the crowd favourite. “I’m happy to be through to have another match.”

Federer will face off for the 31st time against longtime rival and last week’s Montreal champion Rafael Nadal, winner of eight titles from 11 events this season. The Spaniard got a test from Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov but won 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Russian qualifier Dmitry Tursunov upset third seed David Ferrer 6-2, 6-4 as the Spaniard now leaves town with one win from two Masters events over the past fortnight.
