Deteriorating law and order: Nawaz summons high-level meeting on security
Meeting to be summoned either after or during Eidul Fitr holidays.
ISLAMABAD:
In the wake of targeted attacks in Karachi, Mach and Chilas, which have claimed the lives of over 20 people, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to summon a high-level meeting to discuss the country’s deteriorating security and law and order situation.
“Prime Minister Nawaz plans to summon this meeting immediately after Eidul Fitr,” a senior government official, part of the premier’s entourage in Madina, told The Express Tribune via phone on Wednesday.
“However, given how critical the [security] situation has become, this meeting may even be held during the Eid holidays,” he added.
According to the official, the prime minister is unsatisfied with the output of the intelligence agencies. As such, he will ask military officials to attend the meeting to provide input pertaining to the intelligence agencies, he further revealed.
Sources, meanwhile, say that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, as per the premier’s special instructions following attacks in Karachi, Mach and Chilas, is in contact with all four provincial governments and security authorities as well to chalk out an arrangement for curbing the recent wave of terrorism across the country, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Earlier, Nawaz strongly condemned the assassination of army and police officials in Chilas and the killings of passengers aboard a bus in Mach, and directed the interior minister to extend all possible support to federal and provincial law enforcement and intelligence agencies for hunting down those involved. The premier also ordered a comprehensive report on progress in this regard be submitted to his office without delay.
