Damage struck rural areas left stranded

Suburbs of Islamabad suffer an estimated loss of Rs830.252 million in damages during the recent monsoon season.

ISLAMABAD:
The suburbs of the capital have suffered an estimated loss of Rs830.252 million in damages during the recent monsoon season, an official of the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) revealed.

According to an ICT report, the monsoon floods left many bridges, streets and roads significantly damaged in the rural areas of the capital. The most affected union councils have been Sohan, Bhara Kahu, Phulgran, Tumair, Kurri, Kirpa, Tarlai, Cherah, Shah Allah Ditta, Koral, Sihala and Rawat.

“We have forwarded the estimated amount to the Planning Commission and whenever they release the funds, the rehabilitation work will start,” said Assistant Director Local government Hassan Abbas.

He added that some officials from the Interior Ministry visited the damaged sites and assured the Planning Commission that funds would be released soon. Abbas said projects scheduled for the financial year of 2010-2011 were also pending due to the non-availability of funds. “Several meetings have been held with the Planning Commission regarding these projects but the lack of funds has left them at a standstill,” he said.

Similarly, there are some development projects that were scheduled for the financial year of 2008-2009 that are also still incomplete.
