KARACHI:
A gang of robbers, allegedly involved in a number of cases of street crimes in the Defence Housing Authority, were busted by the Rangers personnel on Friday.

The suspects, who were reportedly busy looting passersby near the Sultan Masjid, were arrested after an exchange of fire with the paramilitary soldiers.

According to the Rangers spokesperson, the officials on routine patrol spotted the robbery and tried to intercept it by asking the alleged robbers to surrender. Instead of surrendering, the robbers reportedly opened fire on the squad, injuring a Rangers official, Mujahid.

The Rangers personnel also retaliated by opening fire, wounding one suspect and later arresting three of his companions. One of the suspects, however, managed to escape.

The injured Rangers and the alleged robber were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors said that their conditions were stable.

The Rangers spokesperson claimed to have found four TT pistols and looted valuables, including cell phones and cash, in possession of the suspects.

The suspected robbers were later handed over to the Clifton division police where cases were registered against them.

According SP Nasir Aftab, the suspects revealed their involvement in multiple cases of street crimes in DHA and its adjoining areas. Police said that they will conduct raids as part of the investigations to arrest more gang members but did not disclose the names of the suspects in custody.
