Tit for tat? MNA Nawab Wassan’s brother attacked, PML-F leader nominated in FIR
Police guard of PPP MNA’s younger brother killed in firing incident on Tuesday.
SUKKUR:
The Khairpur police registered a case on Wednesday against the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional leader Tahir Imtiaz Phulpoto and seven others over their alleged involvement in a firing incident at the vehicle of Fida Wassan, the younger brother of PPP’s MNA Nawab Wassan, at midnight on Tuesday.
In the incident, Fida Wassan remained unhurt, but his guard was killed. According to reports, Fida was on his way to Khairpur from Karachi when some unidentified men intercepted him near Tando Masti on National Highway and opened fire.
His police guard, Aijaz Ali Khushk, was critically injured. The guard was taken to Khairpur Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Fida’s driver has registered an FIR with the Economic Zone Police against the president of the PML-F in Khairpur, Tahir Imtiaz Phulpoto, and seven others, but no arrests have been made. The deceased policeman was laid to rest in Jadushah graveyard. MNA Nawab announced Rs300,000 for the family of the deceased policeman as compensation and a government job for his brother or son.
May 11 attack
On the day of general elections, Nawab was accused of opening fire on the supporters of PML-F near Mumtaz College polling station, leading to the death of party worker, Abdul Wahab Morejo, and causing injuries to seven others, including Phulpoto.
A case was registered against Nawaz, which was later challaned in an Anti-Terrorism Court in Khairpur.
The court had cancelled the MNA’s bail and ordered his arrest, but he managed to escape from the court’s premises. In the first week of July, a bench of the Sindh High Court in Sukkur granted interim pre-arrest bail to Nawab.
He was represented by the former chairperson of Senate and law minister Farooq H Naik. At that time, the court had fixed August 1 as the next date of hearing.
Court hearing
On Thursday, MNA Nawab Wassan and his lawyers, Farooq H Naik and Maqbool Awan, appeared before the division bench of the SHC in Sukkur for confirmation of interim bail.
The petitioner’s lawyer, Advocate Ghulam Shabbir Dayo, however, was not available, therefore, his junior filed an application for adjournment. The court, comprising Justice Farooq Ali Channa and Justice Azizur-Rehman, adjourned the case till September 5.
Nawab while talking to The Express Tribune said that PML-F’s Phulpoto was involved in the attack on his younger brother. All clues were pointing towards him, he added.
On the other hand, PML-F workers termed the registration of the case against Phulpoto as an act of political victimisation.
