The Society for Special Persons (SSP) on Wednesday held a seminar on the rights of people with disabilities in the country.

Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Decent Work and Person with Disabilities’, SSP Chairman Syed Ejaz Shah urged the government and civil society activists to pay attention to the plight of disabled people. He urged traders and industrialists to offer them jobs without prejudice or fear. He said disabled persons were as committed to their work as any other person. He called for the construction of ramps at entrances of mosques and public places to facilitate the disabled. International Labour Organisation (ILO) representative Sadia Hameed encouraged disabled people to participate actively in society. Muhammad Shafique, an activist, urged people with disabilities to make full use of technology. “Wheelchairs are like cars. They get us from one place to another,” he said. Pakistan Workers Federation representative Sikandar Hayat said the government should specify an employment quota for special persons according to their proportion in the country.
