Workshops held at the 4th Annual Symposium focus on orthodontics.
KARACHI:
The 4th Annual Symposium of Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences (DIKIOHS) started on October 4 with pre-symposium workshops in DIKIOHS, SMC Campus, Karachi.
The official inauguration ceremony of the symposium will be held on Friday, October 8 at DIKIOHS, SMC Campus. The vice-president of the Muslim Commercial Bank will be the chief guest at the inauguration.
Workshops held on Monday focused on orthodontics, which deals with the proper alignment of crooked teeth and prosthodontics, which deals with artificial teeth and replacement with fixed and removable prosthesis.
The workshop was conducted by Dr Imtiaz Ahmed, in charge of the department of orthodontics, and Dr Gule Erum, assistant professor in the same department.
Forty people participated in the workshop. Dr Imtiaz explained the mechanism and theoretical basis of micro-implants, the newest technology developed to align crooked teeth. After the lecture every participant was instructed to carry out the procedure on a model.
The second workshop on Prosthodontics was conducted by Dr Muhammad Abbas. He lectured on how to prepare the teeth before placing a zirconium-based crown.
Zirconium bases for fixed crowns and bridges is a new development in the field of restoration. Previously the crown base use was crome-cobolt alloy, which was black and required a lot of opaque (an opaque finish) and a thick layer of porcelainin order to match the crown’s color with the rest of the teeth. This required excessive tooth cutting and even root canals at times. Meanwhile, zirconium is a white-coloured metal so a comparatively thinner layer of base metal is required. Certificates were distributed to participants at the end of the workshops.
