Discretionary funds: PWD DG among 20 officers suspended

As many as 20 officers of Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD), including the acting Director General have been suspended after being alleged of involvement in a multi-billion-rupee embezzlement.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), on the orders of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to initiate inquiry against these officials regarding corruption in the Peoples Works Programme (PWP-II) who received as much as Rs47 billion as part of former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf's discretionary funds, sources told The Express Tribune.

Mian Masood Ahmad, the junior officer of BPS-19 who was so far serving as the Staff Officer (SO) of Chief Engineer Central Zone (CZ) Lahore Ataul Haq Akhtar, will now assume the charge of acting Director General (DG) PWD.

The PWD report available with The Express Tribune, which has also been presented before the minister of state for Housing and Works, stated that these officers were found involved in corrupt practices, commissions, kick backs as well as misuse of authority particularly in development schemes under PWP-II.

A senior official of the ministry said that in line with its zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the Housing Ministry issued suspension orders for acting DG, Chief Engineers, Executive Engineers (XENs), Sub Divisional Officers (SDOs) , Assistant Executive Engineers (AEEs) and Sub Engineers of the Pak-PWD.

The PWD report further outlined separate corruption charges for each individual officer in the draft prepared for the state minister for Housing and Works.

The officers suspended include:

Acting DG Sarwar Awan, former Chief Engineer CZ Lahore Shahdin, Exective Engineer (XEN) Humera Khurram Khan, XEN Hasan Akhtar, XEN Nighat Anwar, XEN Javed Akbar, XEN Pervez Iqbal, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Arif Rasool, AEE Khursheed Ahmed Mirza , AEE Nadeem Abbas, AEE Zubair Ahmed, AEE Abdul Qayyum and Sub Engineers Sikandar Hayat , Tajjamal Hussain, Amjad Bhatti, Niamat Ali, Faizul Hassan, Abdul Waheed, Iram Alam, Ghulam Sarwar, and Ijaz Hussain.

The cases of these officers will be referred to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), said a senor officer of the Pak PWD.
