Just last week, the Times of India carried a tantalising news story. Mr Mani, a home ministry official, on the testimony of a police officer, Mr Satish Verma, submitted an affidavit in the Indian Supreme Court in the Ishrat Jahan case. The affidavit revealed that the Indian government had staged the 2001 terrorist attack on the Indian parliament and the 2008 Mumbai attacks, in order to legislate stringent anti-terrorist laws.
Ishrat Jahan was a 19-year-old girl from Mumbai, who died in an encounter with the Gujarat police. Refusing to buy this story, her mother demanded an inquiry. The Ahmadabad metropolitan court, in its 2009 judgment, said that Ishrat Jahan had died in police custody and the explosives, rifles and other weapons allegedly found in the car and on her person were all planted by the police. Later, the Special Investigation Team, appointed by the Gujarat High Court, also declared the alleged police encounter that killed Ishrat Jahan ‘fake’.
The Gujarat police tried to link the investigation of Ishrat Jahan with the 2008 Mumbai blasts by using the testimony of David Headley, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai blasts, who declared Ishrat Jahan a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative.
The obsession with national security can blur the distinction between the lawful and the unlawful. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, democratic states, including India, have attempted to bolster national security by strengthening anti terror laws and technological surveillance. However, equipping the security apparatus with draconian laws is fraught with serious repercussions for a democratic polity.
One consequence of strengthening of anti terrorist laws is that they can be selectively used against minorities. Secondly, anti-terrorist laws can also turn the population of any state into its ‘primary enemy’. Thirdly, anti terrorist laws can be misused in a state polity, where the law enforcement machinery is corrupt to the core and there is a history of colluding with political bosses for personal gains.
Mr Mani’s declaration that the Indian government staged terrorist attacks may well be far removed from reality, but it also contains a kernel of truth: faced with threat from invisible enemies, the state arms itself with arbitrary powers that are unleashed against its citizens. To safeguard against state tyranny, the civil society of India must strive to investigate suspicious killings of its citizens. The relentless pursuit of the truth will serve the cause of justice and secularism in India.

@Syed: Google Ashoka the Great and the Mauryan dynasty.Check the size of their kingdoms.They were larger than the Mughal dynasty.Being Hindus and Buddhists they will not feature in Pakistan's history.We know that you people claim to be descendants of Arabs
@Raaz: "Any post or article that speaks a bit against India rattles Indians a lot. Why is it so?"
Then who do you think it should rattle? The Martians? Specially when the blog comes bundled with a bundle of lies.
@ Tony Singh Any post or article that speaks a bit against India rattles Indians a lot. Why is it so?
@Saleem Hatoum: Did you hear Ajmal Kasab saying Bhagwan?
@Pakistani: "The news concerns Pakistanis so we are bothered about it. Statement was most damaging. Nobody would believe India now."
Oh really!!!
Three observations : 1. The author clearly thinks Pakistan is in India. Please tell her partition happened in 1947. 2. By writing this blog (now in opinion section of ET), she has proved no matter where they stay, Pakistanis would always be "conspiracy theorists" 3. King's college can get it wrong too. I do not blame them. Afterall to err is human.
@Rashid:
This Observer guy stole that from my post in a previous thread. Anyway, being the original author of that sarcastic satire, I must say they are the real facts. Osama bin Laden is still living in Delhi under the Indian government's "protection". Let me elaborate.
In fact, Osama changed his turban and beard to that of a Sikh and changed his name to Manmohan Singh. The Indians made him their the prime minister to lead them in their rampage of terror across the globe. This proves that the Indian government is a terror supporter and cause of all terror in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, USA, Europe and China, all committed under the leadership of Manmohan Singh (aka Bin Laden).
@Observer
Sarcasm is not a substitute for facts.
Ajmal Kasab a Muslim????? Did anybody ever hear a Muslim saying Bhagwan, Bhagwan.....all fraud by the Indian Govt and its media.
There are three democracies in the world, India, Israel, and USA. All of them have occupied others lands, tortured people, detained people illegally, cooked up false flag operations and their media is worst then Hitler's propaganda machinery...
Should there be any doubt in the Conspiratory Indian Psyche after such a prolonged experience? Right from the day "Pakistan Zinda Baad" was shouted; the Indian started their large scale campaign of instigation, exploitation and subversion against Pakistan. They made a breakthrough in East Pakistan by their patronized "Mukti Bahinis". They cut the supply route of Pakistan Army, fighting Indian sponsored terrorists by creating a fake drama. However they couldn't get anything out of East Pakistan conspiracy as they miserably failed to convert East Pakistan into East Bengal and convince the Bengalis to join West Bengal despite their huge investment for about 25 years and that turned out to be Bengla Desh. Instead they have created another bitter enemy and staging same disturbances in BD. Thereafter they managed to exploit Sindhis and some slogans of "Sindhu Desh" were heard, but it was sensibly controlled. Now copying Americans they attempted to create Attack on Parliament and Bombay Attack drama, for creating cruel laws for larger scale killings and subduing any voice against Indian Government, as well as blaming Pakistan to keep them on the defensive and pose themselves as the "godfather" in the subcontinent. The fact of the matter is that the Indians never controlled the whole of the subcontinent in their history; there were small Raja, Maha Raja states. These were Mughals who controlled whole of Indian Subcontinent for the first time in the history, which later passed on to the British. With the British gone the whole of India is at the verge of breaking, Nuxalites, Bengalis, Hyderabadis, and Sikhs for Punjab etc. Thus the Indian Government is under immense pressure and attempting to create new dramas everyday to divert International attention and blame Pakistan for causing destruction in India. I sincerely suggest that Indians have vast fertile land, vast natural resources, large manpower; they should concentrate on full utilization of their available resources and look after their people instead of killing them and hatching conspiracies. That is what can keep them together.
@Adeel:
"Why aren’t Indians investigating this statement?"
It is for the same reason that the scientific community is not investigating the claims that the earth is flat as 'The Flat Earth Society' maintains.
@farya: Of course there are many thing that India need to improve upon..we do agree..But unlike Pakistan,India is build under a strong foundation.
Maybe we do not have the luxury of protecting all of our civil liberties in the face of an existential threat like terrorism.
@Sneha madam lets do some charity
The infamous Parliament Attack, 2001, after which India moved its forces and deployed them on Pakistan`s borders and created a war like situation and for which later on they hanged Afzal Guru without legitimated evidence of this involvement, has eventually turned out to be a big hoax. Now are we again going to blaim pakistan for this hoax?
Yeah, our own elected government is killing us.lol. another conspiracy theory by pakistan and some of our foolish delusional patriots here. I am referring to our liberal narcissist phobic Indian citizen who run for cheap publicity stunts like public interest litigation and not the patriot missiles of USA. Rab rakha.
LOL.. Looks like ET is unable to find enough "Intellectuals" in Pakistan to fill its OpEd pages so they are giving space to silly blogs. Next time dear Author do write about how 9/11 was a Jewish conspiracy, I am sure you will even find a few Jews who can validate your assertions.
It is the need or the hour for the Indian government to really think on their social values. We have trusted them just as a gud democratic ally but if the continue to behave like this then it will cost some serious repurcussions on us as well. It is really hard to beleive that a democratic state meticuously planned this attack on its own people just for the sake of some laws.
Though, we did our best to get international sympathies so we maligned the image of our regional adversary. But we have been truly exposed and its shameful movement for us. We have killed our own people and destroyed ourselves
There can be little doubt that the Indian government orchestrated the parliament attack, the Mumbai attack, several dozens of other terror attacks in India. It was Jaswant Sigh who hijacked the Indian Airlines plane to Kandahar to build a false case against JeM.
Indian government also carried out the 9/11 attack and blamed bin Laden, hiding him in India and telling the Americans he was living in Abbottabad while he was and still is living comfortably in Delhi. The Americans, finding just couple of goats in the so-called Bin Laden compound in Abbottabad told the world they had killed bin Laden, just to save face. The the two so-called Chechens who carried out the Boston bombing were really Indian government Hindu agents who were given a skin-whitening treatment in a Mumbai hospital and given Muslim Chechen names.
Now that the cat is out of the bag, the Pakistani foreign minister should demand an official apology for blaming the ISI and Havfeez Saeed for all terror attacks in India.
What is this new ET policy of copy pasting articles from blogs to oped section? This is the third one i am seeing being copy pasted from one section to another.
'Any clod can have the facts, but having opinions is an art' said Charles McCabe...
By holding on to drops of favourable facts forgetting the ocean of incriminating evidence its not hard to see why Pakistan is where it is today.
It is pertinent for the writer to examine, and connect to this piece, the link between Narendra Modi and Ishrat Jahan case. There is plenty in it that should interest her.
Why aren't Indians investigating this statement? Why aren't Indians on this forum at least acknowledging that this statement was made, and that if true, it has grave consequences for India... why?
India, like the USA, is killing its own citizens. USA conducted 9/11! And India 26/11. This plays well in Islamic societies which are full of zealous truthers. Conspiracies galore.
Look what are they doing in Kashmir
Muslims in India are more safe than those in Pakistan !What Modi said that when country faces some grave crisis because of faulty policies of CongressGovt., they hide in burkha of secularism,i.e. trying to polarize the country on religious grounds for vote bank politics. Why you distort the facts for your pet theories ?
@Rahul: O really....What do u know about democracy sitting in Pakistan....pehle taste to karo democracy ko.... just Indian naam rakhne se democracy ko nahi jaan paoge....
Nobody in India will get away with killing people, whether in real or fake encounters. The matter is in Court and will be decided there. Eight Police officers are already under arrest and their fate will be decided in Court. Those killed by the Police were criminals and terrorists, which also will be proved in Court only. To believe that fake encounters have not taken place in the past is foolish. To also believe that in future too no fake encounters will take place, is stretching things too far. However the Law must take its course, while public can keep speculating. As long as accountability is there and wrong doers will be punished, justice will be served.
congress thoroughly working to cheat indian middle class in which modi charisma is growing, before general election. this incident of a retired govt. officer revelation is orchestrated by congress like sanjay dutt case who got convicted another time and media of the congress created a big hype around it that he is taking Geeta, the religious text with him in jail, everybody knows he will be out after election. recently digvijay singh made a statement that rss and bjp are protraying him anti hindu, why suddenly he started caring about hindu, he absolutely knows the pulse of the middle class who are going to decide the future election.
are they killing their own citizens without doubt they, are they are all at it in the sub-continent police paramilitary fire live ammunition at unarmed protesters. can you imagine that happening in london?
police didn't even use rubber bullets when london was burning in the recent riots.
Kudos to Pakistani journalists for their investigative reporting. Only after reading ET have my eyes been opened to the rotten core of the so called Indian Democracy.
WOW, "David Headley, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai blasts"!!!! Just WHO "alleges" that fantasy dear author???? Just a quick search on Wikipedia for Pakistani-American "David Headley" (born Daood Sayed Gilani) would reveal his part in providing surveillance for LeT for the Mumbai Terrorist Attack of 26/11 and his numerous trips to Pakistan for "Lashkar training"!!! Just a quick search on Wikipedia for 26/11 would reveal an extensive account of the Mumbai Terrorist Attack (with more than 100 supporting references) and some of the players involved. Nowhere is Daood Sayed Gilani (David Headley) considered to be more than a foot soldier for LeT!
Yah right. Kasab is from india and was playing with toy gun right ?
