Rotten meat seized in prison inspection

MULTAN:
An anti-corruption team on Friday seized rotten meat meant to be served to prisoners.
The team conducted a raid on the order of District and Sessions Judge Sarwar Saleemullah.
At least 100Kg meat was seized and samples were sent for laboratory tests.
Assistant Superintendent Maqbool Ahmed, meat supply contractor Muhammad Ayub, store-keeper Waheed Zafar and two butchers were taken into custody.
An FIR was lodged against Ahmed, supervisor of prisoners’ meals.
Superintendent Anjum Shah will also be examined in the case.
The minister for health has ordered an inquiry into the case. Minister for Prisons Abdul Waheed Arain has said he would personally monitor investigations.
Prisons DIG Shahid Saleem was named head the head of the departmental inquiry.
Arain told The Express Tribune, Aarayin said, “Last week, I had caught them serving substandard meat and issued warnings.
This time there will be a formal inquiry and statements from prisoners would also be taken.”
He also ordered departmental action and inquiry against the contractor.

Faisal Akram, whose brother is serving 10 years imprisonment, said the prisoners were treated “worse than animals”.
Overcrowded jails pose problems for jail authorities
All eight jails in Faisalabad region are overcrowded and lack basic facilities.
The Borstal jail is an exception with 162 juvenile offenders are being held against a capacity of 224.
Faisalabad Central Jail has 2,661 prisoners against a capacity of 1,130.
Faisalabad District Jail has with 2,202 prisoners against a capacity of 823.
In Mianwali District Jail, there are 1,827 prisoners against a capacity of 1,050.
In Toba Tek Singh District Jail, 910 prisoners are being held against a capacity of 632. Shahpur District Jail has 887 prisoners against a capacity of 412. Sargodha District Jail has 1,359 prisoners against a capacity 563. Jhang District Jail has 1,881 prisoners against a capacity of 916.
Jail officials say that overcrowding makes it difficult to provide facilities outlined in the Pakistan Prisons Rules and the Jail Manual.
