ISLAMABAD:

President Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Abdul Rauf Chaudhry as the federal tax ombudsman (FTO).

According to a statement released by the Presidency, the president, acting upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s advice, approved Chaudhry’s appointment as the FTO for a period of four years.

“The formal term of office will begin when the president administers the oath. This might take a few days,” Chaudhry said while talking to The Express Tribune.

Chaudhry replaces Dr Shoaib Suddle, who completed his four-year term on June 2, 2013.

Considered among the most upright and honest officers, he has previously served at multiple positions during his career. He joined the government service as a district management group officer in 1974.

Since then, he has served as the secretary ministry of housing and works and ministry of textiles on different occasions. Chaudhry has also served as an additional secretary and joint secretary in the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

This would, however, be his first tax-related job. Despite this, Chaudhry was confident his lack of experience in tax affairs would pose no problem in efficiently managing the affairs of the FTO.  “Already there are advisors working to assist the FTO in his work on every aspect of tax affairs’ regulations. So there will be no problems,” he said. He added that he had prior experience in finance and hinted that it would help him grasp the FTO’s functions easily.

After taking oath of office, the FTO cannot hold any other office of profit in the service of Pakistan.
