New Climate Change Division Secretary Rana Hasan Abbas has urged the division’s officials to play their part in checking environmental degradation and achieving sustainable development.
Abbas was chairing a review meeting on Friday about the division’s goals and targets for 2013-14. He said that since Pakistan is highly vulnerable to the vagaries of climate change, there is a strong need to tackle changing weather patterns through viable mitigation and adaptation plans.
Abbas, who assumed charge as secretary this week, was briefed about the activities of the division’s international cooperation, environment, development and forestry wings as well as attached departments that included the Pakistan Environment Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Pak-EPA Director General Asif Shuja said as many as 50 industries in Islamabad have been monitored and efforts are being made to ensure that these industries do not pollute the environment.
