Bowling team fails to impress in Korea

KARACHI:
Pakistan’s campaign at the fourth Asian Indoor/Martial Arts Games 2013 remained unimpressive as the men’s tenpin bowling team failed to make an impact yesterday in Incheon, South Korea. This came right after the national swimmers had crashed out in the preliminary stages.

The country’s participation had been reduced to bowling and swimming events as the Pakistan Kabbadi Federation and Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association decided to skip the event.

The parallel Pakistan Olympic Association body, led by General (retd) Arif Hasan, still sent a contingent of nine athletes and two officials to Korea to represent the country.

While the bowling team, consisting of Ijazur Rehman, Muhammad Hussain Chattha, Mirza Saleem Baig and Shabbir Laskarwala, qualified for the doubles team main event that takes place today, all four players crashed out in the second round of the singles competition earlier.

“It’s not a bad performance considering that we don’t have a bowling coach in the country,” Pakistan Tenpin Bowling Federation official told The Express Tribune.

“We’re competing against 70 other players in the competition, and we were placed 35th in the singles event. It’s decent enough. In fact our players showed some improvement.”

Swimmers fail to show form

Sarah Tajammul Hussain failed to qualify for the 50-metre breaststroke event as she clocked 46.76 seconds — the slowest among six other participants in the first heat, according to information on the Asian Indoor Games website.

Rida Mitha also did not progress in the 100m women’s freestyle category as she finished last among seven athletes in the fourth heat. She covered the distance in one minute and 11.42 seconds.

China secured 14 gold medals in the short course 25-metre competition, while hosts Korea finished second with eight gold and Kazakhstan won three.
