BADIN: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said the government has decided to tax the rich to mitigate the sufferings of the poor.

Addressing a public gathering in Badin, he said that "democracy knows how to defend itself and it is here to stay."

The president said Pakistan is going through a difficult phase but the government is trying to make it a better place. He said he believes in democracy and he has strengthened the parliament by transferring his powers.

President Zardari said the real power lies with the people and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government came to power with a clear public mandate.

He added that if the PPP supported landlords it would have lost its vote bank a long time ago.

SHA | 12 years ago | Reply i have seen every pakistani contribute and help in this calamity to the extent possible based on his/her wealth and capacity... I have even a labourer who hardly saves Rs 2000 from his monthly wage, give the entire amount to a welfare org. that he trusts... what the govt. and the foreigners are cribbing about is that the pakistanis dont trust their govt. and the money has not gone thru the govt. hands.... people have decided to either go to the affected areas by themselves and help out and contribute or contribute to NGOs they trust or even to the Pak army as they very well know what will happen to their hard earned money if it went to the Prime Ministers Fund... so now the govt. wants to usurp money thru taxes....
