Local bodies government: Minorities criticise 1979 system

PPP should revive the 2001 local bodies system through polls to restore true representation of the people, says Khokar

KARACHI:
The Christian Democratic Union of Pakistan has demanded the Sindh government to review its decision to restore the local bodies system of 1979. In a statement on Wednesday, chairperson Naim Khokar said that the government by-passed the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001, held in abeyance for quite some time, which has prevented the devolution of power to reach grassroots level. He said that the people at the grassroots are marginalised from various crucial decisions. He added that hundreds of workers associated with local bodies have not been paid to make the institution appear poorly governed. He further added that the Pakistan Peoples Party leadership should take this decision seriously and revive the 2001 local bodies system through polls to restore true representation of the people.
