Health matters: Hepatitis on the rise in Sindh
Around 45,000 prisoners in jails across Sindh have been screened since 2008.

The number of hepatitis B and C patients is on the rise in the province as over 30,000 patients are registered with the Hepatitis Control Programme in Sindh whereas those unregistered is believed to be at least double this number, says a report released by the health department.
Around 45,000 prisoners in jails across Sindh have been screened since 2008 on the orders of the Supreme Court for the disease and 710 were found to be suffering from hepatitis B while 749 of them had hepatitis C, according to the recently issued report. Dr Ayaz Memon, the provincial manager of the programme, said that a total of 45,881 patients were screened, 625 were vaccinated, 85 are receiving treatment and 579 have fully recovered.
He said that annual screening was started in 2008-09 and it will continue in the future.
