HYDERABAD:

Reanimating the old friction between Punjab and Sindh over control of natural and financial resources, the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz started a series of protests against the country’s bigger province on Monday.

“The way Punjab is making Sindh financially and economically weaker, we will do the same with it,” said Dr Niaz Kalani, the party’s vice chairman who was leading hundreds of protesters.

The JSQM announced the sit-ins on June 27. Their 24-hour-long sit-in in Hyderabad will move to Benazirabad and Naushehro Feroze in the next two days.

The protesters only blocked the upcountry track of the highway while traffic was allowed to move on the other track towards Hyderabad and Karachi. The party’s young chairperson, Sanan Qureshi, who took the helm after the death of his father, Bashir Khan Qureshi, alleged that Punjab had been committing excesses to Sindh since the country’s independence.
