Arm wrestlers bag four medals on debut
Pakistan to host next edition of Asian championship, says official.
KARACHI:
Pakistan bagged a total of four bronze medals in their maiden appearance at the Asian Arm Wrestling Championship 2013 that concluded in Tashkent.
The 11-member contingent competed against 18 other countries at the event, said Pakistan Arm Wrestling Federation President Qaisar Khan.
Faisal Jutt won his medal in the 110-kilogramme (kg) event, while Muhammad Haroon secured third position in the 65-kg competition. Zamir Sultan clinched a bronze medal in the 60-kg seniors’ category.
In the female category, Karachi’s Sinthia Rose bagged the bronze medal in the 65-kg event.
“It was an amazing experience and, more importantly, we learnt a lot including new techniques,” women’s team coach Nayab Malik told The Express Tribune. “Our team performed well, but we still need to improve in order to win gold medals.”
‘Pakistan to host 2015 Asian Championship’
The arm wrestlers’ impressive performance on debut has also persuaded the Asian Arm Wrestling Federation (AAF) to approve Pakistan as hosts for the 2015 Asian Championship, added Khan.
“We are very proud to announce that the AAF has given us the hosting rights for the 2015 Championship,” said Khan. “Getting the approval to hold the event in Lahore means that we are gaining recognition and we want to make sure that all the 18 countries come to Pakistan. We have enough time to prepare for our first international event at home.”
He added that the next international event for Pakistan will be the World Arm Wrestling Championship in Poland next month.
