CHITRAL:

Unidentified perpetrators set alight the garage of a house owned by the official of a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) and also pelted stones at the residence on Saturday.

Human Rights Program Chitral Chairperson Advocate Niaz A Niazi told The Express Tribune he was out of the district when he was informed by locals of the incident. Niazi said unidentified men attacked his residence and burnt down the garage along with his vehicle. He claimed his family was also taken hostage by the culprits.

Niazi added the neighbours rushed to the house and doused the fire before it caused further damage. He said he had no enmity with anyone and was struggling to highlight issues pertaining to human rights in the district since considerable time.

Niazi informed he has filed an FIR against unknown men and hoped the police will apprehend the culprits soon. He also pledged those trying to dissuade him from his goal would not succeed in doing so, and such acts would only strengthen his resolve.

Meanwhile, the lawyers’ community of Chitral condemned the incident during an emergency meeting of the District Bar Association. Participants demanded an immediate investigation into the case.
