Defective washing machine : Damages awarded to petitioner

The court had issued notices to the respondent and initiated ex-parte proceeding on May 29, 2012.

LAHORE:
A consumer court directed a shop owner on Tuesday to pay Rs20,200 to a petitioner who had sued the shopkeeper for selling him a defective washing machine. The petitioner, Fazeelat Bibi, had sought Rs500,000 in damages in addition to the cost of the washing machine and the money the shop had charged for repairing it. Fazeelat Bibi had filed the petition against the proprietor of Fine Centre located on Patiala Ground Link Road. She said that had purchased the machine on October 24, 2009. It had a five-year warrantee. However, she said, the machine stopped working after a few weeks and was repaired for Rs4,200, despite the warrantee. Fazeelat Bibi had then asked the owner to replace the machine, when it developed a fault a few weeks later but was refused.  The court had issued notices to the respondent and initiated ex-parte proceeding on May 29, 2012. On Tuesday, the court directed the respondent to refund the petitioner the amount she had paid for the washing machine (Rs6,000), what he charged for repairing it and Rs10,000 as damages.
