Inequality: Economists argue for land reforms
Dr Hussain suggested creating a fund to purchase land for remaining 42% landless farmers.
ISLAMABAD:
Speaking at a dialogue on land rights organised at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), economist Dr Syed Akmal Hussain said that land reforms are necessary for alleviating poverty and generating economic growth, stating that it is the most efficient way to solve economic inequality. He explained that there is 2.6 million acres of cultivatable agricultural land available with the government and suggested that the government must create 5 acre plots and distribute it among the landless which would immediately empower 58% of 8,97,000 landless farmers. He also suggested creating a fund to purchase land for remaining 42% landless farmers.
