ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Thursday said that unfortunately, there were "bets" being placed on the future of the government.

Malik was speaking to the media outside the Parliament House. The interior minister's statement comes after rumors of a ‘change’ in the government has been making rounds in the media.

Adding fuel to the fire, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chief Nawaz Sharif lashed out at the government today, saying photo sessions with the army were not enough to save the government. He added that the government would have to prove itself by performing.

Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira also responded to talks of change, saying the current democratic government was not under any threat and it would continue to strengthen the political system.

The federal minister termed the recent speculation of a regime change as ‘conspiracies by a‘certain mindset of the followers of dictatorship who can never tolerate the democratic system’. He said that such elements exist among all segments of the society with designs to benefit from dictators and they cannot survive in democracy.

Earlier this week, a critical meeting took place between President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, where the leaders “resolved to defend and protect the democratic process and to resolve all issues in accordance with the Constitution”.

Echoes of change have been making rounds with major political heavy weights in Pakistan calling for change and some calling for an outright revolution against the ‘corrupt’ system.

haseeb | 13 years ago | Reply First of all, I don't believe that anyone should go any where, i am against these Go Go slogans. They all should be grabbed and brought to justice. In this manner the current judiciary is doing a great job, i don't care if even they become personal with the current government as the politicians posses neither a good moral character nor any worthiness of being respected. We can't afford another looter living out of country in a state of exile, which is merely a relaxation time to regain strength to return to the politics and suck the country's wealth again. Unfortunately, Nawaz sharif is just doing point scoring and nothing else. His support for the judiciary raised my eyebrows as he has a history of disrespecting judiciary and attacking the supreme court building with his pendo followers. Long live Pakistan.
