LAHORE:

Five marla houses would be exempt from property tax under Rs5,000, Excise and Taxation Director General Humayun Mazhar Sheikh said on Friday.

The government had previously announced withdrawal of a general exemption on all houses on five-marlas or less. Under the proposed budget, all houses would be taxed. The Excise and Taxation Department divides residential areas into six categories. Localities falling in category A would pay the most tax and those in category F, the least.

Some localities in Lahore have already been in category A, more would be added to the list after the survey proposed to be taken over the next three months, an Excise and Taxation official said. Sheikh said tax liability for each house would be determined according to the rent it would fetch.
