ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) has urged the government to provide incentives in the new federal budget to encourage promotion of solar energy in the country as a short-term solution to Pakistan’s growing energy problems.

ICCI President Zafar Bakhtawari said that solar energy was an environmentally-friendly source of energy and could be produced in the shortest possible time. The government should encourage conversion of power supply to solar energy in government offices, banking, and private educational institutions as well as all street lights, he said. Bakhtawari urged the government to allow duty free imports of solar panels to lower costs and encourage production of solar panels locally to make them viable for exports.

Pakistan government should allow duty free imports of solar panels. Most, if not all, imports of solar panels would be from China as they are the lowest cost manufacturers and this is one area where Chinese dumping would be greatly beneficial to Pakistan.
