Govt of Punjab postpones LB elections
The government of Punjab has decided to postpone local body elections for six months, saying the rehabilitation of flood displaced people needs to be given top priority.
Administrators had been appointed through a Local Government Odinance for 180 days, after which the government was bound to hold elections. However, since the elections have not been held as yet, it is legally imperative for the government to extend the administrators' tenure.
Meanwhile, a new bill will be tabled in the forthcoming assembly session to get the legislation for the extension of the administrators' term through.
On Tuesday, the Sindh Assembly unanimously approved a bill to postpone the local government elections for an indefinite period. The assembly cited the devastation caused by the floods as the reason behind postponing the elections, saying that the situation currently facing the country was not conducive for local government elections.
