KARACHI:

Three men reportedly belonging to Awami National Party (ANP) were shot dead on Saturday evening in Jamshed Quarters.

Police officials said the incident took place near the party’s office near Lasbela Chowk. According to witnesses, the victims arrived in a car to a market near the office. Four men on two motorcycles intercepted and shot at them.

The witnesses added that the men in the car responded with gunfire and one of the attackers was hurt. But his companions helped him escape, leaving behind one of the motorcycles.

The victims were identified as Naveed Ahmed, 30, Mohammad Sarfaraz, 45, and Mukhtar, 42. The bodies were taken to Civil hospital.

ANP condemned the incident and demanded the immediate arrest of the suspects. According to the party’s spokesperson, Naveed was the ward’s president and Sarfaraz was its general secretary.

After the incident, unidentified men came out onto Nishter Road and blocked it off. The protesters set fire to tyres and pelted passing vehicles with stones. Shops near Lasbela Chowk and its surrounding areas were shut. A heavy contingent of law enforcers rushed to the spot but was unable to calm the protesters down.

Police officials have ruled out the possibility of the incident being a sectarian, ethnic or political attack. While talking to The Express Tribune, DSP Zameer Abbasi said, “It was just a fight between two rival groups - the men have been killed by their rival group members.”

The officer said Naveed and Sarfaraz were ANP workers while Mukhtar was not affiliated with the party. DSP Abbasi added that the police have also gathered the criminal records of Naveed and Sarfaraz while further investigation is under way.

Sub-inspector killed

In a separate incident, a sub-inspector, 52-year-old Sher Mohammad, was shot dead in Qasba Colony, within the jurisdiction of the Pirabad police station. Law enforcers said the victim was on duty in the Iqbal Market area of Orangi Town when the incident took place.

SHO Abdul Moeed said that Sher Mohammad had arrived to the area on his motorcycle when at least two armed men, also on a motorcycle, shot and killed him on the spot. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. SHO Moeed said the motive behind the shooting has yet to be ascertained.
