‘Nation will forgive Zardari if he returns its money’
Nawaz Sharif says Zardari must return the nation's wealth amassed through kickbacks and commissions.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif has said that the nation will forgive President Asif Ali Zardari if he takes a courageous step and returns its money.
In an exclusive interview in the Express News programme Kal Tak he said that he wanted to give a bold suggestion that Zardari must return the nation’s wealth amassed through kickbacks and commissions.
He said that Zardari should have said at the time of the murder of Benazir Bhutto that he had committed some mistakes and that he wanted to turn a new leaf by returning the nation’s wealth he had gathered through illicit means, but he missed that opportunity.
Sharif said that he could do this when he was elected president, but again he let that chance go a begging. “He should do it now,” advised the ex-premier.
“Everyone knows how the money was gathered that is now stashed away in Swiss banks. Everyone knows it is not fair,” said Nawaz Sharif.
Replying to a question, he said that the cases filed against Zardari during his tenure were not fabricated as there had been proceedings against him (Zardari) in Swiss courts where no fake cases could be accepted.
He said the army should not be involved if the government does not implement the Supreme Court verdicts as there were other means of their implementation. He said he wanted to ensure independence of the judiciary and did not want to bring any disgrace to it for an individual.
Nawaz Sharif said that the present government failed to bring any improvement in its two-and-a-half year. Rather the situation has deteriorated compelling the people and TV channels say that dictatorship speaks about dictatorship which was a shame.
He said some people say that the Mushrraf era was better than the present one but I want to ask one question: what did he give to the country?
