Court orders: Shops to remove power generators off walkways
Petition filed against the city commissioner.
KARACHI:
A petition has been filed in the Sindh High Court against the city commissioner and others for failing to keep a check on shopkeepers who have installed power generators on walkways.
The United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan took up the matter in the high court through a petition filed by its general secretary Rana Faizul Hasan. He said that various banks had encroached upon the footpaths by installing heavy power generators in densely populated neighbourhoods.
“These generators help the commercial centres, but deny the ‘right of way’ to pedestrians,” he said. “They also cause noise and environmental pollution.”
The petitioner said that all those responsible for such activities could be punished but no action has been taken. Headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, the bench issued notices to the provincial chief secretary, local government secretary, the commissioner and administrator, and provincial advocate general.
