YJHD not our life’s documentary: Ranbir, Deepika
Actors say their past was not the reason for why they were cast for the film.
Once upon a time, actors Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone were the most enviable Bolly couple. Their last film together was Bachna Ae Haseeno in 2008 and now, they are sharing screen space in Ayan Mukerji’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), almost four years after their break-up.
During an interview with the Hindustan Times, they spoke about YJHD, their relationship and the pressures they undergo during the promotion of their films. However, Kapoor got a bit exasperated when questioned if their relationship in the past helped their chemistry in the film. “It [YJHD] is not a documentary about our lives!” he said and continued, “I don’t think it adds or subtracts from the film. Deepika had great chemistry with Saif Ali Khan and Shahrukh Khan in Love Aaj Kal and Om Shanti Om with, respectively.”
Concurring with Kapoor’s statement, Padukone said that she does not think that director Ayan Mukerji cast the two because of their history. “He [Mukerji] signed us up because we are correct for our roles. Maybe he feels that we have certain chemistry with each other which will be good for the film, but I don’t think being in a relationship helps a film.”
However, Padukone added that the fact that she is friends with Kapoor saves them the time they would spend on knowing each other on sets. “We are already comfortable with each other,” she said.
Denying that the questions regarding their past relationship makes the two anxious, Kapoor said, “We are more anxious as it is Ayan’s second release and we are so fond of him. He is a wonderful film-maker, friend and person; we also want our film to do well.”
