LG elections postponed indefinitely

Sindh Assembly approves bill postponing local government elections citing the devastating floods.

KARACHI:
The Sindh Assembly has approved a bill to postpone local government elections for an indefinite period.

The assembly cited the devastation caused by the floods as the reason behind postponing the elections. The elections have been postponed indefinitely and it is still not known when the elections will be held.

The other parties unanimously agreed that the situation in Sindh is not conducive for elections right now and that it is not possible for the Election Commission and the government machinery to hold elections. It was also felt that it is not possible for the candidates to carry out their election campaigns owing to the current situation facing the country.

The Sindh Local Government (Fifth Amendment) Ordinance 2010 had been promulgated by Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad in August postponing the LG elections indefinitely in view of the devastating floods that have ravaged the country.

The Sindh Assembly has now unanimously approved the ordinance agreeing that the current problems facing the country are not conducive for local government elections.
