PESHAWAR:

The Awami National Party’s (ANP) fact-finding committee will start examining the causes behind the party’s defeat in the general elections on June 1, and will submit a complete report to party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan on July 17.

“The election results came as a shock to the party – it was necessary to probe the issue,” said committee chairman Bashir Khan Matta at a press conference at the Bacha Khan Markaz on Sunday.

“Our mandate was hijacked by a pre-planned strategy as we were not allowed to run our election campaign,” asserted Matta, referring to the militant attacks on the party in the run-up to elections.

Syed Jafar Shah will go to Sindh and Balochistan and Raiz Sheikh will collect information from the Punjab and Saraiki belt, explained Matta.

Commenting on recent statements made by Asfandyar Wali Khan’s stepmother, “Begum Nasim Wali Khan is a member of the ANP, and if she has any information or any reservations, she should share them with the party leaders.” He added, “It has become mandatory to know the reasons for our defeat.”

Committee secretary Jamila Gillani and other members including Senator Zahid Khan, Jafar Shah, Haroon Bilour, Syed Hanif Shah and Raiz Sheikh were also present.
