Targeting soldiers: Death toll in Mattani attack rises to seven
Nine, including a DPO, injured; an ATS regiment sent for reinforcement also ambushed.

The death toll in Saturday’s attack by militants in Mattani on a police convoy of Kohat District Police Officer Dilawar Bangash rose to seven, while nine have been injured.
Government installations and security personnel in the jurisdiction of the Mattani police station are regularly attacked by militants.
Among the dead are six policemen from Kohat who were in Bangash’s escort squad. The vehicle in the convoy was hit by RPG-7 rifles and caught fire. Militants took away automatic rifles and a heavy machine gun from policemen. The dead have been identified as Sohaib Noor, Nawaz, Nasarullah, Muhammad Mushtaq, Mudasar and Shahzad Khan. The injured DPO was admitted in Combined Military Hospital in Kohat.
Moreover, an Anti Terrorist Squad regiment, which was sent to the area as reinforcement after the attack on Bangash’s convoy was also ambushed by militants, resulting in the death of constable Amir Afridi. Seven were injured including Inspector Imran, Sameeullah, Adnan, Liaqat, Ali, Abdul Karim and Rehman. They were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital.
This is the second round of deadly attacks after the May 11 elections. Last week an army truck was ambushed on the Indus Highway near Mattani which left at least five soldiers dead.
