ISLAMABAD:

As Pakistan’s integrity, independence and sovereignty are dear to China, Beijing will continue to support its ‘all-weather friend’, Prime Minister Li Keqiang said on Thursday.

Addressing members of the upper house of parliament, Premier Li said: “The relations between the two countries will be strengthened in the times to come.” Ties between China and Pakistan have flourished -- regardless of any change on the international front -- as the two countries have similar views on almost all regional and international issues.

The Chinese leader said he counted Pakistan as an important player in Asian as well as global affairs and pointed to the policy of dialogue it pursued to resolve issues.

At the same time, he said, China’s development cannot be separated from its friendship with Pakistan.

The Chinese premier emphasised upon the need to take Sino-Pakistan relations forward, keeping in view the rapidly changing international environment.

In his address, Li profusely stressed upon the friendship between the two countries, saying his government wants to open new chapter of friendship and cooperation with Pakistan.  “We are truly proud to be such devoted friends from generation to generation.”

Li said Beijing will fully support Islamabad to achieve its socio-economic development goals. He underlined the need for adopting a positive approach to ensure development in South Asia, adding that Pakistan has significant influence among the Saarc regional forum.

Li also spoke about the growing cultural ties between the two countries and appreciated growing Pakistani interest in learning Chinese. The premier said that he would continue the government’s efforts to promote the language in Pakistan and will send 1,000 teachers to teach it.

He said his country will also extend scholarships to Pakistani students for higher studies.

Senate Chairman Nayyer Hussain Bukhari praised the People’s Republic of China for its protection of Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity.

“Friendship with China is major cornerstone of our foreign policy,” he said.
