ISLAMABAD:

Former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf submitted an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court on Tuesday months after the apex court issued contempt notices to the former premier.

In a letter written to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on March 9, Ashraf requested the formation of an independent commission to probe the Rental Power Projects (RPP) case. On March 29, the Supreme Court after hearing Raja’s lawyer, issued contempt notices to the ex-PM.

Filed through his attorney, Wasim Sajjad, the former premier opted to withdraw the letter.

Talking to reporters outside the Supreme Court, Wasim Sajjad confirmed that the unconditional apology had been filed and the former prime minister requested that the controversial letter should be withdrawn.

While issuing the contempt notice, the apex court had observed that writing a letter to the Supreme Court was tantamount to influencing the court and interfering in its ambit.

Notice to chairman senate

In a separate hearing, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court issued notices to Senate Chairman Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, seeking his response to a contempt of court petition.

The Senate chairman failed to send references against former interior minister Rehman Malik after he was found to be a dual national.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Chaudhry, issued notices after petitioner Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi informed the court that, in June last year, the apex court had directed Bokhari to send a reference against Malik to the ECP, initiating proceedings against him under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

According to the petitioner, Malik took advantage of Bokhari’s inaction and got himself re-elected as senator after relinquishing his UK nationality.
