Exhibition: Abstract in immensity ‘takes a beautiful turn’

‘The exhibit is a commentary on globalisation’.

“My work is a commentary on globalisation... My region too is affected by it,” says Artist.

LAHORE:

“This is excellent work... It redefines the word ‘abstract’,” said Dr Pirzada Muhammad Ali Makhdoomi, an art critic, of Sajjad Ahmed’s exhibition, Abstract in Immensity, which opened on May 17 at Rohtas II art gallery. It will continue till May 30.

Ahmed is a visual artist. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts and Design at the Beaconhouse National University (BNU) in 2007, where he received a SAARC scholarship for the duration of his studies. He has displayed eight pictures at the exhibition.

“The picture God of Small Things depicts fictional maps created from a vantage point. It portrays the organised nature of capitalist societies in which philosophy, diversity and freedom are confined by the system. It symbolises, at once, the insignificance and celebration of human existence,” said Ahmed. A picture titled Science, Religion and Philosophy shows an airplane window, a metaphor for globalisation, showing three levels that represent science, philosophy and religion, in a way that the three act as one. The picture Economy, War and Anxiety shows modern visual symbols for entertainment, technology, violence, thereby revealing contradictions and complexities in today’s world, Ahmed said.

“My work is a commentary on globalisation... My region too is affected by it,” he said.

Artist Quddus Mirza said, “Sajjad’s work appears simple but is very thought provoking and addresses an important issue.” Afzal Ali Syed, a visitor at the exhibition, said Ahmed’s work was very unusual, “I believe that art has taken a beautiful turn here”.

Sanam Hashmi, an artist, said, “Ahmed’s work is conceptually and visually attractive and innovative.”
