Endemic: Measles outbreak reported in Mansehra
District health official terms it a ‘seasonal disease’.
MANSEHRA:
A measles outbreak has surfaced in different parts of Mansehra district where dozens of children are said to be infected, sources said on Monday. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported as yet.
Locals said several children under the age of 10 have contracted the disease, while six have been hospitalised. The outbreak has been reported in Mahandri, Shinkiari, Balakot and surrounding areas, said villagers.
Younas Khan, a resident of Shinkiari, said more than five children in his village have been diagnosed with measles.
An official source requesting anonymity confirmed five children with symptoms were admitted to a hospital and are undergoing treatment. He added the children were in stable condition and would be discharged within a couple of days.
Another official source at the office of district health officer in Mansehra downplayed the outbreak, terming it a “seasonal disease.” He said a “minor level” measles alert has been reported and teams have been sent to the affected areas to administer vaccines and medical assistance.
The situation is under control of the health department, he claimed.
Medical superintendent of King Abdullah Teaching Hospital, Mansehra was not available for comment.
