HEC saga continues: Functions transferred to edu ministry
Interim set-up overstepped its authority by transferring Commission for Standard of Higher and External Examination
ISLAMABAD:
The latest turn of events following months of farcical decision-making saw the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination (MNHSRC) transfer the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) degree attestation and equivalence certification powers to the education ministry on Thursday. The decision, which has received strong opposition from vice chancellors at several universities, was the result of relentless efforts by both the caretaker and outgoing governments to curtail the HEC’s administrative powers. The interim set-up overstepped its authority on May 9 by transferring the Commission for Standard of Higher and External Examination and powers to grant equivalence for degrees and diplomas, two of the HEC’s prime functions to MNHSRC.
