KARACHI:
Fishermen along the Sonmiani Bay in Balochistan released a whale shark that had gotten itself caught in their fishing nets on Tuesday.

A gillnetter boat called Al-Saira was drifting near Ormara when a 3.5-metre long whale shark became trapped in the net.

The captain of the boat, Muhammad Ismail released the endangered animal upon finding it captured. It took more than an hour to get the struggling shark free.

During February 2013, fishermen had killed a female species of the shark whose carcass was brought to the Karachi Fish Harbour.

Whale sharks are occasionally found from the area but the strength of their population is not yet known. Their only mortal enemies continue to be fishing gears.

Rab Nawaz, Director WWF-Pakistan urged stakeholders to take concrete steps for the protection of the species in Pakistan.
