ISLAMABAD:
The city police on Saturday finalised security arrangements in the federal capital for election day, with 6,500 police personnel deputed to keep watch in the capital’s two constituencies.
The Election Commission of Pakistan has set up 548 polling stations in the two constituencies — 260 in NA-48 and 288 in NA-49. Of these, 40 polling stations have been declared sensitive.
According to the security plan, 6,500 policemen will be deputed in the capital, which has been divided into 17 sectors. Each sector will be supervised by an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) or deputy superintendent of police (DSP). Subsequently, each sector is divided in to sub-sectors and will be monitored by an inspector, while 20 policemen will patrol each area. A special police control room has been set up at Islamabad Model College for Boys in Sector F-8/4, which will be monitored by an SP to ensure coordination among security personnel.
Deputy Commissioner Amir Ali Ahmed said that most of the 40 polling stations declared sensitive were located in rural parts of the capital. He said extra police would be deputed in order to ensure peaceful atmosphere in these areas. In addition, 40 quick response teams of Rangers have been constituted and will be deployed in different areas.
Traffic plan
The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has also made special arrangements and over 400 traffic wardens will be deputed in the city. Four DSPs and SPs will also be on duty and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Moeen Masood will monitor them himself.
