KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has given two weeks to the provincial caretaker law minister and the secretary to amend motor vehicle rules to stop the misuse of diplomatic number plates as well as customised ones.

The minister and secretary have also been told to submit details about action taken against owners of vehicles with illegal number plates and the amount of fines imposed on them. They have also been directed to inform the court about action and measures taken against vendors offering customised number plates and tinted windows.

Chief Justice Mushir Alam, who headed the bench, gave these directions on Friday while hearing a suo motu case based on an incident involving Air Vice-Marshal (retd) Syed Ataur Rehman. About two years ago, he and his son were roughed up by a teenager and his guards who were in a vehicle bearing an Abu Dhabi registration plate and a government licence plate.

During follow up proceedings on Friday, the judges observed that while more directions were issued on May 10, 2011, no action has been taken so far. “The DAG [federal government’s law officer] and the AAG [provincial government’s law officer] are blind,” noted Justice Mushir.

The bench directed both law officers to forward a copy of the order to the caretaker law minister and law secretary, who will submit the reports within two weeks.
