‘Over 70% population consulting alternative medicine practitioners’
Scientists urged to make joint efforts on health services.

Over 70 per cent of the world’s population is consulting alternative medicine practitioners, speakers said at a one-day seminar on We and Natural Medicine jointly organised by the Institute of Horticultural Sciences (IHS), University of Agriculture Faisalabad, and the Pakistan Tibbi Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association at New Senate Hall of the UAF here on Thursday.
UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Iqrar Ahmad Khan chaired the seminar. All Pakistan Textile Processing Mills Association (APTPMA) President Mian Ajmal Faooq was the chief guest.
Muhammad Idrees from Hamdard, Dr Zahid Ashraf and Hamid Ashraf from the Ashraf Laboratories and Pakistan Tibbia College Faisalabad founder Hafiz Muhammad Younas were also present.
Khan said five UAF departments had been conducting research on medicinal plants and their effects on human health. He urged scientists to make collaborative efforts for providing health services to people at their door step.
Dr Khan called for more research on indigenous herbs and reiterated the UAF commitment to preserving this treasure at the botanical garden of the university.
Mian Ajmal Farooq said that Pakistan was blessed with a variety of herbs that were smuggled out of the country. He stressed the need for more collaborative research on herbal medicines.
In his welcome address, Prof Aslam Pervez highlighted the IHS role for the promotion of botanical research. He said the institute was extending vocational training and professional capacity building services during summer vacation.
Dr Khalilur Rahman said the university had cured hepatitis and cardiac diseases using herbal medicines.
The chief guest, later, inaugurated a two-day herbal medicine exhibition in front of the main library.
