KARACHI:

Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has hailed Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani for expressing his absolute commitment and support to the cause of democracy in country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Altaf said the boldness and absolute clarity with which the Army Chief expressed his views on extremely sensitive issues on Tuesday was highly appreciable.

“General Kayani has practically demonstrated to be a soldier who is always prepared for the defence of the country and the nation,” said the MQM chief. He added that Gen Kayani’s statement had given the nation a new strength and confidence besides countering apprehensions about the future of democracy in Pakistan.

“The entire nation stands firm with its army and prays for its success against elements trying to create anarchy and instability in the country,” Altaf maintained.

Condemning the suicide attack on National Peoples Party candidate Dr Ibrahim Jatoi, the MQM chief termed it an attempt by anti-democratic forces to sabotage election activities and stall the upcoming polls. However, Altaf said that although certain forces were targeting MQM, Awami National Party and Pakistan Peoples Party in particular, recent incidents had shown that all political parties preparing for the elections were being targeted.

“Attempts to sabotage rallies and bomb processions, and the killings of citizens show that these terrorists are active against national integrity,” he said.

Altaf said forces keen on imposing their set of fake democracy based on extremism were unacceptable to the people of Pakistan. “The people of Pakistan are moderate by nature and do not approve of an orthodox approach,” he maintained.
