Thousands of freight trucks were stranded on Thursday as key roads around the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) were blocked by people protesting against a Rangers operation in the nearby Lyari area.
Cargo going to the port and containers waiting to be shipped out of terminals could not move, after Jinnah Bridge, ICI Bridge and other roads leading to the main highway were occupied by the crowd.
“We have no option but to park trucks alongside roads within the city,” said Muhammad Shoaib Khan, general secretary of the Karachi Goods Carriers Association. “At least 8,000 vehicles are standing like this.”
Transporters said they haven’t moved goods since Wednesday, which saw a shutter-down strike in the port city on the call of a local political party.
