MARDAN:

Two teenage boys were injured when a hand grenade they were carrying exploded inside the premises of district courts in Mardan on Tuesday.

City police official Abdul Salam said they were told that an explosion occurred near the office of Muhammad Ilyas Advocate on the second floor of the building at around 3:40pm.

Initial investigations revealed the suspected militants were trying to blow the grenade inside one of the offices, but it exploded in their hands before they had a chance to toss it.

The accused were identified as Muhammad Shahab, a resident of Mohallah Burhan Khel, and Shakeel Ahmad, a resident of Katlang.

“We followed the blood trails on the site and arrested the culprits,” said Salam, adding the boys were shifted to the Mardan Medical Complex. Salam added a lever along with grenade shrapnel were discovered from the site of the blast, which damaged the floor, ceiling, office windows and nearby plants.

A case was registered against the suspects who would be transferred to the police station for further investigation after receiving treatment.
