A new surge: Violence in the city claims 10 lives

The victims include policemen as well as activists of political parties.

At least ten people, including political activists and policemen, were gunned down in separate acts of violence on Monday.

Three people were gunned down and three others wounded by armed men in Jamshed Quarters. The victims were sitting at a teashop, Bismillah Hotel, situated near Lasbella Chowk when armed motorcyclists drove up and sprayed them with bullets. As a result, a police inspector ASI Javed Iqbal Awan, 55-year-old Iqbal Akbar, who owned a nearby spare parts shop, and Rana Shahzad, were killed while Javed Akhtar, Iqbal Khan and Khalid Iqbal were wounded.

All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) information secretary Asia Ishaq claimed that Iqbal Akbar and Rana Shahzad were affiliated with the party. There were some unconfirmed reports that Shahzad had submitted nomination papers for PS-91, Baldia Town, but had later withdrawn.

Forty-two-year-old Mohammad Rashid, a Karachi Water and Sewerage Board employee who was affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was shot dead by armed men in Bahadurabad.

In another incident, a police constable, Amjad Iqbal, was killed and another constable, Ali Ahmed, was wounded by armed men near Godown Chowrangi within the limits of Korangi Industrial Area police station.


In a separate act of violence, Ashfaq Khan, a school teacher was shot dead inside the Ideal School, situated in Sector 4, North Karachi.

A 45-year-old man Shahid Hussain was also gunned down by armed men in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.

In another incident, Zahid Yar Mohammad, 30, was shot dead as he resisted robbers on Rashid Minhas Road, within the jurisdiction of the Federal B Industrial Area police station.

A five-year-old boy, identified as Taha Faisal, was shot dead during an exchange of fire between two political groups in Landhi. A young man, who has yet to be identified, was found dead near Rexor Bridge, within the limits of Pak Colony police station.
