KARACHI: A prisoner of Central Jail, Karachi, 57-year-old Liaquat Ali, died under mysterious circumstances on Thursday.

An official from New Town police station said, on the condition of anonymity, that the deceased had been charged with theft and sent to prison a few weeks back.

“He was transferred to the jail’s hospital on Wednesday after his health deteriorated suddenly,” he said, adding that the deceased was taken later to Civil hospital, Karachi when his condition worsened. Ali passed away while being treated at the Civil hospital on Thursday.

A representative of the hospital said that the deceased had been subjected to extensive torture by the police. Police officials, however, denied this claim and alleged that he passed away due to drug addiction.
