Rebuttal: Western Union denies FIA probe

WU clarifies it stopped cooperation with ZECPL immediately after the latter faced allegations of acting improperly.

ISLAMABAD:
Western Union (WU) has denied reports that the Federal Investigation Agency is looking into its activities, along with those of Zarco Exchange Company Private Limited (ZECPL) and the State Bank of Pakistan, pertaining to international remittances.

In its statement on the matter, WU clarified that it stopped its cooperation with ZECPL in August 2009 immediately after the latter first faced allegations of acting improperly.

The statement stressed that to WU’s knowledge, ZECPL had not been convicted of any wrongdoing. It further stated that WU has been cooperating in the investigation and remains willing to fully cooperate with any legitimate law enforcement enquiry.

It also mentioned that the Lahore High Court passed an interim order on WU’s petition on April 11, barring the FIA from harassing WU.

WU further maintained that it has not been informed by any authorities that it was being suspected or accused of any unlawful activities.
